Shopping in bucharest food markets
If you’re travelling on a budget, you will certainly find this information useful. If you’re coming in the summer time you will enjoy shopping in Bucharest’s food markets. Whether it’s just to make a picnic lunch or to pick up a snack, a visit to food shops is also a great way to learn about the real Romania and about its food. There are big chain supermarkets in Romania just as there are in other parts of the world, but for a more old-school experience visit specialty shops with Romanian traditional products. And for the best prices you can find, find out when and where the open-air food markets in Bucharest are held.
One of the most famous markets is Obor which has an entire hall with great vegetables and fruits, meat and dairy. Is very easy to be reached too – just get off at the Obor Metro Station and get out at the part with Soseaua Colentina and you get exactly in the front of it. Be aware at the pickpockets. Being really crowded, you never know what might happen. For your curiosity, us, Romanians, we have a sixth sense: “detecting foreigners”. As we thought in communism, the foreigners must be wealthy and just good to be fooled. Though you have to be really careful, you must know that we managed to keep under control the phenomena. You’ll be safe if you’re not Superman’s cousin and looking for an adventure in the ghetto! Just kidding!

Supermarket
The first Romanian-owned shopping centre, La Strada, has opened in Tiburtina, a district of Rome. Visitors are few and far between, and the Italians are even scarcer. Feature Aducen Romania mai a proape de tire!, reads the slogan that greets visitors at the entrance to the shopping centre La Strada. ‘Bringing Romania closer to you,’ translates the sign next to it. This is Romania transported to Italy for the Romanian population, particularly for those living in Tiburtina, the north-eastern district of Rome, where there is the largest community on the peninsula.
Green Tea
Nestled in a residential area of sector 2 very close to Molly’s Irish Pub off of Calea Mosilor is Greet Tea House. Green Tea Bucharest has a nice selection of “most” teas that one would desire, as well as the norm in coffee shop fare. So why does this make it on our Top 5? Being the “warmer” spring months, and transitioning in to summer, one would “desire” an outside terrace. Well this place “takes the cake” for the outside terrace areas. A very “english garden-esque” setting from the moment you walk in the door, this tea house will cater to your “whimsical desires” all the way until 11 at night. Part of a quaint cottage, this tea house is a must visit while in Bucharest. Drinks are priced between 8-14+ lei, so the prices fit right in with normal coffee shops around town.
