Tradition & culture
The apartments in Bucharest that we offer can be a perfect launching pad for an adventure in Romanian culture. Bucharest apartments, with the help of Romania’s strong transportation network, are very close to the cultural capital of the surrounding areas. By train, bus, or through care rentals, Bucharest is tied to the rich folklore tradition that surrounds.
The strong tradition of folklore is one of the most distinct aspects of Romanian culture. The folk tradition has been steeped in the rich cultures of many peoples. Romania has been a great intersection across the ages. Romans, Slavs, Ottomans, Germans, Hungarians – all of these cultures have affected the people and history of Romania. One of the more striking folk traditions involves the skilled working of wood. In many contexts the Romanian people have created what can only be described as masterpieces in wood. Churches throughout Romania feature incredible wood carvings that date back to 17th and 18th centuries when there was a prohibition against the construction of stone Romanian Orthodox churches. The church pictured above is located in the village of Sarbi in North-Eastern Romania.

Traditional clothing
The colorful linen and wool of traditional Romanian garb is also quite distinctive. The rich colors of the catrinta (a straight apron, pictured below) are distinctly Romanian. Other parts of traditional dress, for women, include, the fota (wrap around skirt) and (often) red printed head scarves. For men, there are two distinct variants of pure white trousers. In winter, men wear tight trousers to keep in heat. While summer pants are much wider, allowing for air flow.
These clothes are traditional wear, and are only still worn commonly in remote rural settings. The clothes are still often made and worn in more urban settings as historical documents – keeping the shared history of the Romanian people alive. But it is music and dance that often pulls people from apartments in Bucharest and out into the countryside. While the upbeat numbers bear much in common with the Balkan and Hungarian traditions, the lovely sentimental doina are considered unique in the world. Meanwhile the complex dances for men, like the calusari have been considered “ Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritages of Humanity.
Bucharest apartments provide launching pads into this world. Also, Bucharest apartments are within a short trip to the Village Museum in that city. The museum features artifacts from Romania’s folk tradition.
